<image:title>Blog - Hamilton City, New Zealand, in brief. - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Photo: Richard Philip A morning walk in the beginning of winter at the Memorial Park in Hamilton City, Waikato, New Zealand. It was the warmest winter ever for New Zealand this year (2021) with the average temperature being 9.8C primarily due to the La Niña effect, which is the irregular recurrence of the upwelling of unusually cold water to the ocean surface along the western coast of South America, which in turn disrupts typical regional and global weather patterns in a manner opposite to that of the El Niño effect. Add climate change to the mix and you’ll understand why winter looks like the beginning of autumn in this picture.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Hamilton City, New Zealand, in brief. - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Photo: Richard Philip A Tudor garden. Nobles who wanted to be in Queen Elizabeth’s good graces built gardens like these in their estates for her to enjoy when she visited them during her annual progress (yearly tour through the kingdom). Their vying for the Virgin Queen’s attention ensured that thrifty Elizabeth could live in luxury at the expense of her nobles, who were eager to please her with the best food, entertainment and accomodation. The design for Tudor gardens - including the knotted hedges in the four sections - were based on Thomas Hill’s gardening manual titled Gardener’s Labyrinth. Thomas Hill was an astrologer and a book translator. Besides gardening books he produced works on a range of subjects including the interpretation of dreams, arithmetic, physiognomy and astrology. He wrote the Gardener’s Labyrinth under the pseudonym Didymus Mountain.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Photo: Richard Philip The Huddleston Airship. It flies and delivers mulch throughout the Hamilton Gardens, when you aren’t watching. The Huddleston Airship is a nod to steampunk subculture that has its source in Victorian-era science fiction (think HG Wells and Jules Verne) and real developments in technology that were taking place during the Industrial Revolution. Airships like these, also known as dirigible balloons, did in fact take flight during the 19th century. Non-rigid airships are called blimps, rigid ones, zeppelins. The first steam-powered airship - built and piloted by French engineer Jules Henri Giffard - lifted off on the 24th of September 1852, fifty-one years before the Wright Brothers' first flight. Traveling at about 10km per hour, Giffard traveled almost 27km from the Paris racecourse to the French city of Élancourt in north-central France.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Music</image:title>
<image:caption>Night is about a few strangers who get together to spend their last night on earth. The idea came to Richard when he was listening to Chopin's Nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor. He was working as a medical journalist at that time, so he had to write the script in short bursts, on weekends. The five-day breaks between writing were disruptive. Nocturne provided the continuity he needed to maintain the flow of the narrative and dialogue. He would loop the track on the CD player and write as the piece went on in the background. Practically the whole script was written on Friday and Saturday nights as Nocturne played on. Music has the power to breathe life into the stories that lie dormant within us.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Music</image:title>
<image:caption>Together with co-director Law Soo Leng, Richard conducted feedback sessions with fellow artistes to get a sense of their thoughts and feelings as they went through weekly rehearsals spread over a period of 8-9 months. While the themes that arose from the discussions and research surrounding the work did not directly influence music composition, they nonetheless contributed to the emotional pool that musicians tap when they write songs. Richard experimented with chord progressions until he arrived at one that resonated with broad aspects of the human condition, such as pain, mystery, sorrow and injustice. The song, “Mr Mystery” was born. It served as a musical description of the paradoxical forces at the root of crimes against humanity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Music</image:title>
<image:caption>Duet is a contemporary dance piece resulting from a collaboration between choreographer and composer. The work led to an interesting exploration of space, time and sound. Silence is alive with music and, modern dance, with its juxtaposition of movement sequences bearing different time signatures, for example, can create the kind of intellectual ambience conducive to the creation of copacetic melodic lines. The contemporary dance work was also a good case study on how music can leaven, empty or fill the collective mind of an audience primarily engaged in its visual field. For example, decisions on the level of activity in the visual space had to factor in the level of activity in the sonic space and vice versa. Broadly speaking, choreographer-composer collaborations work well when practitioners of either form discover similarities in the other and speak using terms that indicate confluences. Terms like "sonic dance" and "visual music" carried along the collaboration smoothly.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How I Walked Into a Story and Came Out With a Song: A Journey Into the Invention of Music From Words is a book that sheds light on the mystery and power of creativity. Through short stories, songs composed based on the stories, and interesting, highly revealing narrative essays on the creative process involved in deriving music from works of fiction, author and musician Richard Philip captures for us aspects of the multidirectional, recursive process involved in creative cognition. This book is the product of a one-year research project carried out as part of the Master of Arts in Music program at the Waikato Institute of Technology in Hamilton, New Zealand. As part of his research, Philip documented the process of composing songs from stories via the research methodology known as Practice-Based Research, which involved keeping a written record of his creative practice in the form of a handwritten journal and the maintenance of audio records as evidence of the ongoing composition of melodies and lyrics. Having passed through a robust peer review process this book is a valuable repository of artistic works and insightful documentation of creative action. Readers will learn how a morphing combination of imagery, metaphor, and dialogue can crystallize themselves along a melodic thread. They will find out how to interact meaningfully with the things they read. This book is about how to take something good from the world and leave something good behind.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In Richard’s debut novel: The Bending of Strong Forms, the narrator Selah embarks on a journey to find out why he gave up his existence as a timeless, eternal being to live in a world bound by time. Through a sumptuous feast for the imagination that includes outrageous dreams, numinous memories, and extraordinary but plausible connections between quantum physics and the soul, Selah tells the reader a magnificent story that reads like a fiction but feels like truth.</image:caption>
